Ever feel like you just want to go home and can’t focus anymore? Ever dozed off in class? Getting more sleep is a key solution, but changing and maintaining a sleep schedule may be challenging. Here are some life hacks for you to stay energised for school!

1. Eating a banana

We often feel lethargic and need an energy boost for the day. Rather than relying on caffeine, we can eat a banana. Bananas contain fibre for improved digestion and disease prevention. Risks of colorectal cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, and type 2 diabetes are significantly reduced. Bananas also contain Vitamin C for better immune health, Vitamin B6 for improved metabolism, potassium for organ health, magnesium for improved blood pressure and blood sugar. The sucrose, fructose and glucose in bananas keeps us energised for the day. Even if we are in a rush, it is convenient to grab a banana without the need to wash or cut.

2. Step out of the classroom during recess

Surely, most of us have spent recess rushing homework, or just catching up on AAs and revision. Sometimes we may feel so overwhelmed that we rather spend recess in the classroom. However, stepping out of the classroom is essential in maintaining our focus and energy throughout the day. After 3 to 4 continuous hours of sitting in the classroom, having a change in environment, even if it is studying in the library, is useful. We will feel more refreshed and our minds will be clearer, increasing effectiveness and productivity for the rest of the day. Some benefits of walking include easing joint pain, boosting energy, improving mood and inspiring creative thinking.

3. Staying hydrated

We should drink 6-8 glasses of water per day. Hydration improves brain performance. It positively impacts cognition, stabilises our emotions and combat feelings of anxiety. Our joints also stay well-lubricated, and joint movement becomes smoother. We experience less pains and aches, improving our physical well-being. When we are dehydrated, our body stores more heat, lowering our abilities to tolerate hot temperatures. Hydration produces sweat when we are overheated, this cools our body down. This is especially useful in tropical countries like Singapore and the increased temperatures due to climate change. Drinking water also keeps us healthy and less likely to fall sick.
