I’m sure the recent two cases of students like us collapsing during PE lessons have given all of us quite a scare, and probably made us raise doubts about the risks of our PE lessons and how strenuous it should be. In the first case, a 16-year-old Tanglin Secondary School student died after jogging during a PE lesson. The second case involved a 13-year-old Temasek Junior College student who fainted and died during PE class. What’s more, these two cases happened only two weeks into the new school term! I know I need not say more about them, as they are already known throughout the whole of Singapore and are already being reported widely about in the newspapers and the media. So why am I writing this article? Well, I just want to share some tips that I found online about keeping safe while exercising! Firstly, bring a water bottle to hydrate yourself constantly! Heat stroke is a real possibility in sunny places like Singapore, where temperatures can reach as high as 35 degrees Celsius. So always remember to bring your filled water bottles to every PE lesson! Next, always inform your PE teacher if you don’t feel well before the start of PE class. Do not be bothered by what your friends might say, as this could be a matter of life and death. Thirdly, before and after any physical activity, do not forget to warm up and cool down properly! My personal experience is that, there was once I did not warm up properly before the start of a PE lesson, and I ended up with muscle aches for the next 3 days which hurt especially when I climbed the stairs! Lastly, wear breathable fabrics like cotton whenever you engage in physical activity. This shouldn’t be an issue in our school, as our PE T-shirts are already cotton. This point is for strenuous physical activity outside of school. In the midst of having fun during PE lessons, do take note of yours’ and your friends’ safety! Take good care of yourselves and stay safe in PE lessons!
