Why I can’t survive without Spotify

Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music- Spotify is undoubtedly the GOAT. The vibrant green circle with three curved white lines resembling sound waves inside reflects more than just an endless catalogue of music, though that is a plus too, it serves as the collective heartbeat of over 600 million people worldwide. In the current stressful and worry-filled generation that is the 21st century, Spotify is my emotional support app.

Music has always been an integral part of my life. Jacky Cheung was the soundtrack of my childhood, Shawn Mendes was my school life playlist, Charlie Puth was my first concert, and The Weeknd was playing during most of my study sessions. I’m now listening to as much Enhypen as I can consume but with all the genres and genres of songs on Spotify, who knows what will pique my interest next.

The playlists are the true MVPs. I have a playlist for everything, cheaper therapy, crash out hour, 23:42, yellow, and more! Every playlist speaks a lot about the user, consisting of carefully selected picks of different genres, moods and events. With a playlist for every occasion, Spotify lets me play background music for every moment in my very own drama series.

If I need a refresher but don’t feel like making my own playlist, Spotify already provides specially curated playlists that are uniquely mine, filled with songs I might enjoy. I might not know the wizardry behind the algorithm but it gets me scarily well. Spotify also provides introductory playlists for different artists ‘This Is TOMORROW X TOGETHER’ to help new fans familiarise themselves with the artist’s discography. Spotify really has thought of everything.

Arguably the best invention in the history of music, Spotify Wrapped. I wait months every year just to see how many minutes I spent blasting my favourite tunes. This feature compiles my year’s listening habits into a personalised musical yearbook, and offers a trip down melody lane. Seeing that I’ve played that one song 119 times and that one artist I spent 10,000 minutes with? Definitely something to be proud of. Spotify Wrapped summarises my favourite version of myself.

The main reason why Spotify is the one app I will never delete from my phone despite my depleting storage? It's my escape. The world is loud, overwhelming, stressful and chaotic, but with my earbuds in and my favourite tunes going, I can tune out everything that is going wrong with my life and enjoy the song, even if it’s just for a few minutes. It keeps me sane.

Spotify is more than just an app- it’s a lifestyle. Would I survive without it? Maybe. Would I be moody, sad, on the verge of utter despair? Absolutely.
