When Brooklyn Nine-Nine first debuted in 2013, its lighthearted humour, unique characters and refreshing takes won over many skeptics. It presented comedy beyond typical workplace shenanigans and broke past the barriers of cop show cliches, tackling social issues such as feminism, racial profiling, LGBTQ+ representation, and yet never bringing down any marginalised communities. Years after its prime time, this show still remains fresh and relevant, as one of the most iconic, rewatchable sitcoms of mine.
The most important part of this sitcom was its strong, unique characters and their personal growth. As the show followed Jake Peralta’s journey as a police officer, it also saw his personal growth and maturity, as he grew closer to his police captain and fellow officers, without losing his fan-favourite jokes. Every character in the show had a distinctive and deeply relatable traits, especially their own flaws and imperfections, with immense character development at the end of the 8 seasons.
In short, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a stand out sitcom, for its genuine characters, clever writing and relevant social topics. It has won the hearts and minds of many across the globe, including mine.
