Have you ever tried churros, fried dough pastries coated with a fine layer of sugar? While Singapore offers many different types of cuisine, Mexican food seems to be the one we shy away from. I decided to go on a culinary adventure and expose myself to a world of new flavours when I chanced upon this restaurant at Our Tampines Hub.

Guzman Y Gomez is a casual-dining restaurant chain that specialises in authentic Mexican dishes such as burritos, tacos and quesadillas. The first item that caught my eye when I surveyed the menu was the aforementioned churros. They were priced at $3.50 per piece and served with dulce de leche, a type of sweetened milk. I decided to give them a go, along with a mug of hot chocolate.

Fried on the spot, rolled in cinnamon sugar and presented in a basket lined with parchment paper, Guzman Y Gomez’s churros were a sight for sore eyes. Undeterred by the fact that they were piping hot, I picked one up and bit into it. It was crunchy and packed with flavour, with a lingering sweet aftertaste. They reminded me of Chinese Youtiao, only that they were on the sweeter side. I tried dipping it into their signature dulce de leche too, which was smooth and creamy.

I enjoyed my snack in peace, gazing at the news articles featured on the walls about the culture and heritage of Mexican food. The bright yellow decor brought a smile to my face while the upbeat music lifted my spirits. It was truly a memorable dining experience and I am glad that I had the opportunity to try Mexican food for the first time!
