‘I Not Stupid 3’ is a Singaporean film which came out in 2024. It is the third film of a series, being the sequel of ‘I Not Stupid’ and ‘I Not Stupid Too’. My mother brought me and my brother to go watch this film together, saying that it would ‘help improve our chinese skills’.
This film follows the story of two boys in primary school, Wang Zi Hao and Jayden Lee, and we watch them as they prepare for their Primary School Leaving Education (PSLE) in primary 6. Both of their mothers put immense pressure on their sons, controlling them and forcing them to constantly study hard 24/7 for their own reasons.
As a Singaporean film, this film is extremely relatable since we have all experienced the pressure of having our first ‘big’ exam which decides our future school. The typically Asian way of being extremely competitive in our studies because of our parents always comparing grades with others is really imminent in this film, hitting hard. We watch as the two main characters get pushed to their limit, having extremely strained relationships with their friends and family and even resorting to cheating and sabotage.
There’s one scene where as Jayden is chosen to give a speech about the topic ‘My Mother’, he’s at a loss for words. All his mother has been doing is forcing him to study all the time and he’s slowly losing his close friends. Jayden is unable to say positive things about his mother. When he heads home at the end of the day, his mother buys him a burger as a gift, saying she knows that he won first place in the speech competition. Jayden has to break the news to her that he didn’t place well at all, knowing that he has disappointed her and she will take away the burger.
The ending of this movie is also very emotional and touching, and we get both mothers realising that they’ve been too hard on their children and they apologise and reconcile with each other and their sons.
I would really recommend watching this movie! The realistic plot got me hooked and I nearly cried towards the ending where Jayden lashes out towards his mother.
