While visiting Osaka, I had the chance to try one of Japan’s most popular side dishes – the gyoza! For someone who loves Japanese culture and cuisine, I could not resist giving up the opportunity to try it. After seeing the long snaking queues formed in front of the famous Osaka Ohsho store in Dotombori Food Street with its hard to miss 3D gyoza sign and inhaling its tantalising smell, I immediately rushed to queue up.
The gyoza is made of a thin sheet of flour filled with vegetables and meat, and is shaped like a dumpling. After taking my first bite into the steaming gyoza, I could already taste the savory sauces and oil oozing out of the skilfully grilled crisp dough. The subtle flavour of the chopped up cabbages, ginger and onions filled my mouth, followed by the taste of the succulent pork. I felt like I was in seventh heaven as I swallowed the last bit of the gyoza, making sure to let the taste linger as long as possible.
After eating several gyozas, I flushed it all down with a piping hot cup of Japanese tea! The popcorn-like taste and grainy undertone complemented the rich flavour of the gyoza well, leaving me with a “fuzzy warmth” in my stomach.
Overall, I was incredibly satisfied with my experience at Osaka Ohsho and would definitely recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Japanese cuisine! Osaka Ohsho does not only offer gyozas, they offer many other Japanese dishes, like ramen or chicken katsu, that will be sure to give your taste buds a sumptuous treat! If you would like to try it out yourself, you can head to their restaurant at Raffles City Shopping Centre or other locations around Singapore!
