Pineapple on pizza – the controversial unpopular opinion

Should pineapple belong on pizza? This never-ending debate sparked my attention when I saw a twitter post about it the other day. Some people feel that pineapples, as a sweet fruit, should not be mixed with savoury food, while others feel that pineapples make pizza taste much better.

Personally, I feel that pineapple should belong on pizza.

Firstly, pineapple has many health benefits. They are packed with nutrients, antioxidants and other helpful compounds, such as enzymes that can fight inflammation and disease. Pineapple and its compounds have also been linked to many health benefits, including aiding digestion, boosting immunity and speeding up recovery from surgery, among others. With pizza itself being tremendously unhealthy, topping pizza with pineapple lets people feel a little less guilty for eating an extra slice of pizza.

Secondly, putting sweet pineapples on pizza also helps to balance out the flavours and makes it more pleasing to the taste buds. With the most common pizza flavour being pepperoni pizza, adding some sweetness onto it will balance out the saltiness. While I do agree that savoury food tastes good by itself, there is no harm in adding some sweet flavouring as it just enhances the taste of pizza.

Lastly, pineapple on pizza gives it the “Hawaiian” flavour. It is a well-known fact that the Hawaiian flavoured pizza always contains pineapples on it. With the sweet, tropical flavour of pineapple, one can simply close their eyes and feel the Hawaii breeze. Eating Hawaiian pizza just gives you a great feeling of euphoria, as if you were there at Hawaii itself, and it is something that no other pizza topping can provide a sense of.

Overall, while I understand why some people would feel that pineapple does not belong on pizza, they should not hate on other people for their differing opinions. Everyone has their own preference on pizza toppings. While some may disagree on them, there is nothing they can do to change one’s preference and pizza will always still be our comfort food – with or without pineapple on it.
