The book thief

“I have hated words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right.” – Liesel Meminger

This is based in Death’s point of view. In 1939, Nazi-occupied Germany, Liesel’s life is changed when she picks up an object by her brother’s grave. It is The Gravedigger’s Handbook, left behind there by accident, and it is her first act of book thievery. That action began her “love affair” with books. Liesel learns to read, thanks to her foster father. So the adventure begins from stealing books to housing a Jew, what can happen next?

I feel that The Book Thief is an excellent book that really evokes emotions out of me. Writing like this is not what anyone normal like you and me can do, this is true art. I think Markus Zusak really deserves a standing ovation for this book as this book is written ever-so perfectly, with all the words falling into place. This book is an eye opener to the events of Germany, especially what Hitler had done.

When I first picked up this book, what intrigued me the most that made me want to read it was that this book was based in Nazi- occupied Germany, but was not in the point of view of a Jew. At that time, all the books I had read, example, The Diary of Anne Frank, were all in the point of view of a Jew person and never ever had I read a book in the point of view of anyone else. This book did not prove disappointing, as it went on to surprise me with a lot of things and took me on a rollercoaster ride throughout this entire story.

The Book Thief is a book which is great for those who love reads about the Holocaust, and those who like books that are a bit slower paced than normal books. This book is a particular favourite of mine.

The Book Thief is an extremely thought-provoking book and I highly recommend you to read it.
