“As a musician, my goal is to bring jazz and classical music to my generation.” These are the words of Icelandic-Chinese jazz-pop artist Laufey (pronounced lay-vay). Laufey’s ability to channel mid-20th century jazz while using decidedly modern words gives every song a nostalgic yet remarkably fresh feel.
To me, what resonates most powerfully in Laufey’s music is her lyricism. Each song feels like a story being told, unfolding with every word. Her ability to transform deeply personal experiences into something universally relatable evokes a strong sense of comfort. “I think people my age are tired of music that doesn’t make them feel anything,” she noted.
Her most recent album, Bewitched, explores various themes, from “Second Best” delving into one-sided love, to “While You Were Sleeping”, about the realisation of falling in love.
A song that stands out to me is “Letter To My 13 Year Old Self”, a song in which Laufey wishes to tell her younger self not to worry too much as it will turn out fine in the end. Lyrics like “I wish I could go back and give her a squeeze, myself at thirteen; and just let her know, know that she's beautiful” feel personal yet universally felt.
Laufey’s artistic journey is only gaining momentum. With her distinctive vocals, heartfelt lyrics and undeniable talent, she is quickly becoming the face of the next generation in music. For anyone with an appreciation for music, or who is simply looking to discover a new artist, I can’t recommend Laufey’s music enough. Her music isn’t just heard – it’s experienced, resonating deeply with audiences on a personal level.
