“King of pop.” When people hear this term, their first thought brings them back to Michael Jackson. Despite his tragic death at a young age of 50, Michael Jackson is regarded as one of the most significant pop icons of the 20th century.

Born on 29 August 1958 in Gary, Indiana, Jackson started performing in a pop group called ‘Jackson 5’ with his four brothers as a child. The group, though young, was immensely popular. They managed to score their first No.1 single in 1969 with the song “I want you back” and quickly rose to fame. A cartoon series and TV variety show were even made based on the Jackson 5. However, media attention focused on Michael Jackson, whose high-pitched voice received much praise for. By the age of 14, Michael Jackson had released his first solo album. However, he did not get his breakthrough until 1979 with ‘Off the wall’. He became the first solo artist to score four Top 10 hits with one album. What happened after that was history. Hit after hit was released by Michael Jackson himself. His album ‘Thriller’ became the biggest selling album up to that time, selling some 45 million copies around the world and clinching him seven Top 10 singles, and eight Grammys.

However, his life started going downhill during the late 80s. Jackson had many accusations of child molestation and went through investigations. Although he was acquitted of the accusations in 2005, many still debate about whether those allegations are true till this day. He later passed away in 2009 at age 50 after a cardiac arrest.

My favourite song from him is ‘Smooth Criminal’. With an infectious beat and groove, this song is indeed favoured by the crowd. This song has a contemporary vibe and is unique compared to most songs made back in the day. The eccentric melody that perfectly glued to the bassline and drums, the rapid pace of the beat, the detailed choreography are enough to sweep me off my feet. This song is indeed a banger that I fell in love with at first listen. I highly recommend listening to it as it was indeed phenomenally produced.

I personally feel that Michael Jackson should forever remain as a respectful figure in pop history. His music made a huge impact on pop culture and many pop artists in this day and age often take inspiration from his music. He was also the creator of the moonwalk, his signature dance move. Many dance routines I see often include the moonwalk and I think it is refreshing to see people recreate old moves in a creative way. After listening to his music, I definitely agree that they deserve all the awards they received. Despite all his scandals, I still take inspiration from him as I notice that he always pours his heart and emotions into performing live for his fans. His performances are truly something you cannot forget and I hope future generations will continue learning about his passion and getting inspiration from his music.
