Tate McRae is a 17-year-old Canadian singer, songwriter and dancer. Starting her music career at 14, writing countless songs in her bedroom, she soon released a few independent singles. Just last year, Tate McRae rose to fame with the release of the single ‘You Broke Me First’ which peaked the charts in several countries, including Singapore. Since then, her popularity has increased immensely.

One main reason I admire her is the fact that she has written countless songs herself and even sang them personally. Most of the songs connect me to her because of the similar challenges we have been through that are depicted in her songs. Hence, this is why she is one of the artists who has captured my attention from the start. My personal favorite song is ‘Dear Parents’.

As a teenager myself, I can easily relate to the song lyrics, “Hate that you’ve been saying I’m dramatic, Immature because I just don’t wanna talk” Sometimes, as we are growing up, we might want our personal space. However, this song is not meant to insult parents, but rather to address the problems or conflicts teenagers face with their parents. I do resonate with the message she is trying to bring across through this song- as there are times where we disagree with our own parents and might want to keep some things to ourselves.

Another verse from the song “Oh we know more than what we tell you. But can’t always put into words.” Growing up, it is definitely not easy to open up to our parents. Nevertheless, we should not blame our parents for nagging us but instead make an effort to be patient and reasonable. In return, parents will try to understand and empathise with you. I feel that this song voices out the difficulties of being a teenager and yet has allowed me to reflect on the ways I interact with my parents. TateMcRae’s songs never fail to amaze me as she has the courage to create unique songs based on her own personal opinions. She is undeniably one of the few artists that produces their own songs and I highly recommend her songs to anyone interested in pop music.
