Donning their pinafores and green name badges for the last time, the 2022 graduating cohort returned to St Nicks to collect their O-Level results. For many of them, their four-year journey has been nothing short of fulfilling and we certainly have much to learn from our award-winning students.
Lee Si Jia (4L) - Pupil of the Year
1. Who or what inspires you to persevere through tough times?
My three older brothers have been a significant source of inspiration for me in my journey of perseverance. Throughout my childhood and beyond, I have always looked up to them and aspired to achieve the level of success they have attained through their hard work and determination. Their unwavering support for me has meant a great deal, and I am motivated to follow in their footsteps and become an achiever in my own right, finding fulfillment in whatever I choose to pursue.
2. What advice would you offer to the 2023 Secondary 4 cohort?
I would advise them to pursue their interests. At the start, I had my mind set on doing well academically rather than pursuing my passions. Consequently, I regretted my decision to choose a subject combination that did not best represent my interests. Despite this, my journey in St Nicks allowed me to discover my talents and fulfil my potential. During my time in Debate Society, I realised that my interest lies in the Humanities and plan to change my subject combination entirely in JC. The takeaway is that you should pursue what you are interested in so that you never have to feel as though you have wasted your time and potential.
Denise Bey Yi Jie (4H) - OP Academic Achievement
1. What was the most challenging part of your 4-year journey in St Nicks?
As an individual who is academically inclined, I have often felt the pressure of expectations from my family and peers to excel in my studies. Managing the weight of these expectations and the accompanying stress has been challenging. However, I have learned to remind myself that the most important thing is to be proud of my own progress and achievements, and to live with no regrets.
Tan Jing Wen, Phylicia (4P) - IP Academic Achievement
1. What did you learn about yourself when preparing for your examinations?
One thing I learnt is that I am stronger than I think. At first, I was worried about not being able to prepare for my examinations in time as the subjects were very content heavy. I am thankful to have a strong support system consisting of friends and family who allowed me to see that I am stronger than who I expected myself to be.
Lim En Xin Ernice (4H) - Special Commendation
1. What is a motto that you live by?
The motto I live by is ‘perseverance is key to success’. It inspired me to keep going especially in Secondary Four, where there were instances when I felt like giving up. In the end, perseverance was the driving force that guided me through the challenges I hadfaced.
Rei Ho (4W) – Kindness Award
1. How do you feel about receiving this award?
It was very unexpected for me and I am very grateful for receiving this award. I am especially thankful to those who see me for who I truly am and have supported me along the way. Hence, I feel very honoured and grateful for receiving this award.
2. Is there anyone whom you are grateful to?
I am deeply grateful to my parents for their unwavering support in my life. They have been there for me in every way, from driving me to school to providing for my needs, and I am truly thankful for their presence and care. My mother, in particular, has been a constant source of reassurance, always encouraging me and reminding me that I have done my best, even when I feel down. I am also grateful for the teachers and friends I have met in St Nicks. They have provided me with valuable emotional and mental support, making me feel less alone during challenging times.
Jilliane Lim (4U) – Leadership Award
1. How do you feel about receiving this award?
I feel very grateful for receiving this award, as it means that I am being recognised for what I have done for the school. I think the many leadership opportunities provided by the school, such as house captaincy, being in council and having a leadership position in CCA, allowed me to grow and are my #WhySN moments. These positions gave me the chance to serve the school and give back to my peers. I hope that receiving this award can be an inspiration to our juniors to have the heart to serve and give back to the school as well.
2. How did you manage to juggle various commitments in St Nicks, such as leadership and studies?
The main way I managed my time was to come up with a checklist. Despite the common advice for students to come up with timetables, it was actually not effective for me. Instead, I usually have a checklist for what I have to do during the week and make sure to get those tasks done. Apart from that, the unwavering support from my friends and family has been invaluable in helping me persevere and succeed over the past four years. It has made me realize that tackling challenges alone can be daunting, but having people around you who provide guidance, encouragement, and support can make the journey much more fulfilling and rewarding.
Yannie Ching, (4F) — Leadership Award
1. How do you feel about receiving this award?
I am very grateful and honoured to have received this award. Although I was from St Nicks Primary, secondary school was a very new environment for me due to the independence we were given. I was lucky enough to have been given many opportunities to lead, particularly in council and in my CCA. Through these opportunities, I have tried to step up and contribute to the school by cultivating a sense of Sisterly Love in the school. With the unwavering support of my friends, family, and teachers, I am deeply appreciative of the recognition for our efforts in creating a more positive environment for our 妹妹们 through our various initiatives. This award serves as a powerful inspiration for me to continue my journey in life with a renewed sense of positivity and determination.
2. Who is the one person whom you are most grateful to?
Apart from my family, I must give my thanks to my council teachers. We stepped into our new roles as novices but they have really helped us a lot. From correcting grammar mistakes in captions to supporting and encouraging us when we were in doubt about how to best lead our school and the student body, our council teachers have been there for us since day one. In spite of hectic schedules and event planning, they have never lost their patience with us and have guided us through our roles very well. Hence, I think I must really thank them for their constant guidance and support.
Katelin Heng (4P) — LPS (Sports)
1. How do you feel about receiving this award?
I feel very honoured to be receiving this award. All my hard work and training has finally been recognised and I am grateful that the school has been able to support me in so many areas throughout this journey.
2. How did you manage to juggle various commitments in St Nicks?
The workload at St Nicks can be demanding at times, and I have found myself waking up as early as 6am to start working on my homework in order to manage my responsibilities. I think time management and prioritising tasks are very important. During examination period, I would prioritise school work but during the competition season, I would have to dedicate more time to training.
Stacy Tah — LPS(Arts)
1. How do you feel about receiving this award?
I feel very honoured to receive this award because there are a lot of people around me that have supported and helped me to get to where I am now. I am also very thankful for the opportunities the school has given me.

My main driving force would be my parents and teachers. They have supported and encouraged me the whole way so I feel a sense of responsibility to not disappoint them or myself. This pushes me to work harder and improve.
Amanda Soh — Sister Deidre O’ Loan
1. How do you feel about receiving this award?
I was pleasantly surprised when I was informed that I received the award. I first came across it while flipping through the student diary in Secondary One but did not think too much about it. Thus, it came as a surprise when the teachers informed me that I would be receiving the award.
I feel very honoured that the school has recognised aspects of my behaviour and my contributions to the school over the years.
2. What was the driving force behind your success?
I think the main driving force behind my success would be my family, especially my parents. My parents have been very supportive in what I want to do, mostly letting me make my own decisions on the pathways I want to take and the subjects I want to explore in school. As I believe that my actions are a reflection of my upbringing, I try to strive for the best and be on my best behaviour as it reflects properly on how my parents have brought me up.
