On 27 and 28 January, all students took part in the yearly Student Development programmes, where students looked forward to a string of class bonding and enriching activities to get to know themselves and their class better!
Since all the Secondary Threes were in new classes this year, many of us played games such ‘splat’ and ‘double whacko’ to interact with our classmates and forge new friendships. Jamie Kua of 3 Faith commented, “It was even more fun than last year and I made many new friends!”
Besides playing games, we also discussed our class motto and class flag designs. We used our creative juices to think of meaningful designs and intelligent class mottos that we could all relate to. Once we were satisfied with our designs, all the classes joined a Zoom call to share our final creation with the whole level. Seeing the amount of effort put into the designs in such a short time was amazing!
After recess, all of us gathered in our classrooms for the screening of St Nicholas’ very own movie, ‘From Victoria Street to Ang Mo Kio’. Prior to the screening, our Vice-Principal Ms Baey informed us that the movie was filmed in Penang to preserve its cultural authenticity. We were thoroughly impressed by how the movie managed to capture the essence of school life in the 1950s while appealing to viewers in the 21st century. Drawing inspiration from our alumni 姐姐们, we reflected on our experiences in St Nicks through an interactive Padlet activity after the movie.
Being a leader that impacts the community is part of our school’s vision, “Leaders with Heart”. Hence, we took the CliftonStrengths assessment, a unique personality tool, to discover the top five traits that aligned with our leadership style. It was both surprising and impressive when we found out that our results were unique to one in 33 million individuals. Through the two-day programme, we learnt how to maximise our strengths and apply them to our daily lives.
Overall, the Student Development programme allowed us to break free from our boundaries and immerse ourselves in new experiences with our classmates. Even as the year progresses, we will keep these memories close to our hearts.
