This is the second year that Secondary Three Literature students were invited to participate in the ‘World Literature’ programme with our US sister school, Academy of Notre Dame de Namur, to discuss Literature texts together while making a new friend. Let’s hear what some of them feel about the programme.
Not all classrooms have four walls - I could not agree more.
As participants of the World Literature Programme, we had the opportunity to discuss various texts with our friends from the United States. The sessions started with the teachers’ sharing of two culturally rich texts, ‘Everest’ and ‘The House on Mango Street’. After which, we went into our small Zoom breakout groups, laughing and forging new friendships as we broke the ice with discussions about our favorite local dishes, thereafter, sharing about ‘Joy Luck Club’ and our individually chosen texts. This was an enriching experience which allowed me to gain deep insight in others’ perspectives. (Tan Ser Hwee Odelia, 3 Wisdom)
Through this project, I've gained a lot of cultural and intellectual knowledge. My favourite part of this experience was the discussion we had on an excerpt of ‘The Joy Luck Club’ as I felt that it was extremely fun and eye-opening seeing how our perspectives differed so vastly from one another. While sharing our thoughts on the different pieces of literature, the vast difference in my partner's culture and mine were extremely evident, which really broadened my horizons. I realised that our different cultures and experiences we have gone through have really shaped our perspectives. (Neo Yu Ting Evalyn, 3 Grace)
