This year’s World Readiness Programme (WRP) Symposium, organised by Catholic High School (CHS), explored the innovations and solutions for sustainable cities and living, using China as a case study.
The keynote speaker, Associate Professor Li Mingjiang from the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, NTU addressed Singapore-China relations, including good progress in political and diplomatic relations, economic cooperation, social and cultural exchanges and military and security ties. It also covered China's current transition and challenges in her journey towards sustainable growth, setting the backdrop for speakers’ addresses in subsequent segments.
Following the key address was the segment we had all been anticipating: the JIP inter-school sharing! Before the symposium, each class researched on economic challenges and impacts of sustainability to present during the session. We joined different breakout rooms with students from SCGS and CHS to share our findings. All three schools contributed to a meaningful discussion. Although the symposium was held virtually, we felt a sense of connection with our peers from the JIP schools.
Before the symposium drew to a close, Professor Li addressed our other questions. Many of us realised how privileged we were to be living in Singapore and how we can follow China’s example in pursuing a sustainable future.
Emma Lee from 3 Truth reflected that one simple step she could take to ensure Singapore's sustainability would be to be more environmentally cautious. "I think a lot of Singaporeans often think that recycling is enough, but it isn’t as effective compared to all of us chipping in some time and energy to be more environmentally cautious in our daily habits." She elaborated that being environmentally cautious meant a careful contemplation before purchasing anything or making choices that impact our planet.
In conclusion, this was an eye-opening experience which taught us more about China and the factors contributing to her progress in sustainability. This year’s WRP symposium aided us in understanding the complexities of pursuing sustainability in this day and age.
