Spanning across 17 to 21 April, this year’s English Language and Literature Festival (ELLF) Week was themed ‘The Weird and The Wonderful’ and hosted many programmes and activities to foster students’ love for the language. Students kept their eyes peeled for the Instagram challenges broadcasted on the English Language and Literature Instagram (@sn_el.lit) such as the Blackout Poetry Challenge, Book Character Challenge, Very Short Story Challenge, Meme Challenge and the Good Habits Video Challenge. With the attractive merchandise up for grabs, many of us actively participated in these exciting challenges to pursue our passion in the art of English. Library Society also shared their reviews of many weird and wonderful books on the Instagram page - the books recommended were really intriguing!
One of the many exciting activities we took part in was the ‘Laughing over Language’ Comedy Workshop with Hossan Leong, where we witnessed his natural charm and charisma while on stage. While speaking about the dos and don'ts of comedy, he recounted personal experiences and shared with us anecdotes in his own journey as a comedian.
Of course, we cannot forget about Book Character Day! Held on the last day of the week, teachers and students alike came to school decked out in beautiful, colourful costumes of a character of their choice. Rianne Tee from 2 Purity shared her insights on Book Character Day, commenting that it is a day where everyone can forge deeper bonds through their costumes. “Seeing many students dressed in all sorts of costumes made the day special! Everyone looked so cute!” Not surprisingly, Book Character Day is undoubtedly one of the highlights during ELLF Week which everyone looks forward to.
Last but definitely not least was the highly anticipated speech competition! Widely seen as the culmination of the week’s events, this speech competition was hosted at each of the four levels, where selected students gave their speech in front of three honourable judges from our school. All our speakers spoke with gusto and passion about their chosen topics, demonstrating great speaking skills while managing to hype up the audience and ensure that everyone was entertained! I was really hooked by their ability to convey their messages through humorous methods, such as having a sense of relatability and being amicable with the audience. It was a great experience watching the speech competition!
Sadly, all good things come to an end. ELLF week is over, but I am sure everyone enjoyed the activities and grew more interested in English and Literature. Farewell ELLF week, and may we see you again next year!
