On the 8th of August, a wave of national pride swept through the school as we prepared to commemorate Singapore’s 58th birthday. Coupled with the plethora of activities lined up for us, the melodies of National Day songs which had been broadcasted through our class speakers in the preceding week ensured that the stage was set for everyone to revel in our shared identity and heritage.
We started off the day with a lesson on how we can nurture our Singapore pride. Our form teachers flashed slides on the projector, which consisted of questions such as ‘Is celebrating National Day a good way to nurture our Singapore spirit?’ and ‘How do you feel about National Day?’ etc. These questions allowed us to think about the Singapore spirit and our patriotism. This reminded us of the importance of celebrating National Day and why we do so. It was truly an informative lesson.
Besides that, there were many captivating performances put up by various groups. Firstly, the march-in by the Uniform Groups was impressive. The coordination, commands and Symphonic Band playing in the background were well done. Secondly, the energetic dance item by Dance Society (secondary) and the smooth Chinese dance item by Dance Society (primary) were engaging and set the mood for the day. The medley of National Day songs sung by the Choir was also very fascinating as their melodious voices filled our ears. A splendid performance put up by the Level 1 rhythmic gymnasts from the primary side also wowed all of us by their talent, flexibility and musicality. Next, the upbeat playing of National Day songs, with primary 妹妹们 as the cheerleaders of the songs, further livened the atmosphere as we all sang along to iconic Singaporean songs such as ‘Home’ and ‘Reach Out For The Skies’, as well as this year’s ‘Shine Your Light’. This year’s National Day Celebration’s performances were certainly applaudable and the performers surely put in a lot of effort into the performances.
As the day drew to a close, our hearts were not merely filled with joy, but were also enriched. Certainly, the CCE lessons and performances transcended mere activities, as they taught us the essence of Singapore’s spirit, and inspired us to contribute more actively to the ongoing narrative of our nation.
