Celebrated on 21 July every year to commemorate the Racial Riots that occurred in Singapore in 1964 between Chinese and Malays, Racial Harmony Day serves as a reminder of a wound in the nation’s history which still leaves a scar till today. It also highlights the significance of harmony between all races that call Singapore their home.
Many activities were employed to teach the student body about the essence of Racial Harmony Day. Throughout the week, various games, such as Wordle and a crossword puzzle, were sent out to all classes via the NE Ambassadors, with each game tying back to the theme of Racial Harmony in Singapore. It was heartwarming to see many students enthusiastically trying these daily challenges, eager to learn not only about this important occasion, but also embracing the cultural differences between their friends and schoolmates.
On Friday during the respective recesses, numerous traditional games were provided in the family lounge by our St Nicks Alumni, for students to freely explore and have fun playing. These games ranged from five stones to congak, allowing many students to put their coordination skills to the tests as they tried the tricky games that our parents and grandparents once enjoyed.
Later on, students streamed into the hall for the assembly programme, many of which donning various kinds of ethnic wear, from Chinese cheongsams to Malay baju kurungs to Indian saris and more. It might be rather baffling to a foreigner, but dressing in these outfits in the proper way are meant to show our support and willingness to learn about other cultures apart from ours, displaying the multicultural diversity of Singapore. Everyone was treated to a drama performance that illustrated the alienation that Singaporeans feel towards foreigners, and also being at the receiving end of said hostility in other countries. This impactful performance emphasised the importance of racial harmony and respecting each other's backgrounds and traditions, giving the week a delightful closure.
In the midst of these events and activities, we must remember why our school educates us on these issues. Students of now will become Singapore citizens of tomorrow, and if we do not respect individuals of different cultures and work together for a better future, our tiny island nation will soon vanish into obscurity in the fast-paced, modern world.
