On 18 and 19 May, the Secondary 2 students took part in the exciting annual Student Development Day. Students swarmed the school’s walkways, gleefully searching for their selected activity’s venues. For these two days, students were able to take a break from usual school activities and pursue their passions, such as…

‘Cyanotype’, or more commonly known as ‘blueprint’, is a chemical compound that reacts under the presence of sunlight, forming white when an object is blocking the surface and blue where the surface is exposed. After learning about the history of cyanotype and how it is used, students got to try their hand at designing a tote bag. Numerous materials were provided, such as dried flowers and letters. The students unleashed their creativity and delivered ravishing results! Many were delighted at how the blank tote bag became a canvas for a unique artwork. After washing it, the students were able to bring home their masterpieces.

The Way of the Saber, Saberdo. Under the instructor’s guidance, students grasped the rudiments of the art in wielding a saber, seeking to enhance their motor skills. With unfaltering resolve laced with warring swishes of light, we engaged in duels with one another, all desiring to reign victorious. Eventually, each movement was characterised by fluidity and poise—we were no longer humans, but skywalkers. After concluding the intensive module, we were permitted to photograph unearthly scenes where the world, once clothed within obsidian, indelible darkness, was illuminated by a sole beacon of luminescence, a lightsaber.

Pixel beads was another option students rushed to sign up for, where they fitted together colourful plastic beads before applying a hot iron to fuse the plastic together, presenting pretty designs. In this class, students were introduced to this art form and how to use pixel beads. Then, we were passed materials and permitted to start. We perused different designs online to gain inspiration for our creation, but it was no easy feat learning to work with pixel beads. Eventually after practising, we were able to learn the ropes, and in no time, we were done. We ironed our finished products ourselves, which was an interesting experience for us, and were free to create as many as desired within the time frame. It was truly a delightful and enlightening day for everyone.

This year’s Secondary 2 Student Development Day was yet another enjoyable one. We look forward to the next one!
