“Welcome to St Nicks Street!”

Upon hearing this catchy slogan, we were delighted to find out that the theme for this year’s Secondary One Orientation Camp was inspired by one of our favourite childhood shows - Sesame Street! Elmo, Big Bird, Cookie Monster and many more of our beloved Sesame Street characters bedecked the colourful camp logo which was not only displayed all over the school, but also featured on the lanyards worn around by our Orientation Group Leaders!

In this week-long camp of fun-filled activities and games, one of the most memorable events etched in our hearts was the Amazing Race. As part of the Amazing Race, we were given the chance to work together within our OGs to complete different challenges, from finding pieces of paper around the classroom to hunting for certain items and signs. In a bid to earn as many points as we could for our respective orientation groups, we all poured our hearts into completing the challenges, eager and determined to do our best together as one OG. Despite occasionally feeling exhausted, all of us wore wide smiles on our faces.

“The most memorable part of the orientation camp was the Amazing Race because it allowed us to work together with our new classmates and OG facilitators,” mentioned Rhea Low from 1 Truth.

Chorusing the school and class cheers as loudly and enthusiastically as we could with our new-found friends and OGLs, this camp undeniably allowed us to build stronger bonds and camaraderie with one another. “You can do it!” the exhilarated voice of one of our OGLs echo in our heads till today as we look back on this camp with fondness.

Another key highlight of the camp was the Co-Curricular Acitivity (CCA) Fair. At each CCA booth, we were pleasantly greeted by an array of shiny trophies, vibrant posters, and a variety of eye-catching costumes, props and uniforms on display. The seniors who manned the booths were not only friendly and energetic, but also patient in answering our queries, which encouraged us to explore more CCA options, including those we never really had an interest in before. The high-spirited conversations between seniors and juniors sparked a lively and bustling atmosphere all around the CCA Fair.

Another unforgettable event which we participated in was the Talent Discovery, where we were engaged in various physical activities around the track and field involving running, jumping and throwing. From attempting to throw balls as far as we could, to running 600 metres on the track as fast as we could, to jumping over hurdles and into sandpits, to springing ourselves forward the furthest distance on the standing broad jump mat, we were not only challenging ourselves physically but also mentally. Although many of us were sweating buckets after these strenuous activities, we still had a thrilling experience at the end of the day.

To orientate us to the new school environment and introduce us to the various school facilities, the student council also organised a school tour for us. The beautiful and inviting scenery of the school had definitely caught all of our eyes as “oohs” and “aahs” were frequently heard throughout the tour, especially when we were exploring the rooftop garden, library and staff rooms.

“After orientation camp, I felt a lot more connected with my new classmates. I found the camp fun and fruitful, and our OG facilitators were extremely enthusiastic and encouraging. I learnt the importance of class spirit, and that leadership and initiative are vital to making new friends,” commented Charis Low from 1 Justice.

New school, new friends, new memories. The 2023 Sec 1 Orientation camp ended with the sea of Yellows ready to face the new year.
