In the Shaw Hall of Singapore Chinese Girls’ School, students from three different schools were seated, awaiting the start of this year’s WRP Symposium, focusing on the topic of ‘Ethics in Artificial Intelligence: Diversity and Inclusivity’. To start things off, an AI Literacy Workshop was conducted by My Ng Guoren, AI Engineer (Courseware) at AI Singapore. Mr Ng certainly shared his knowledge with everyone as he explained the technical side of AI.

Following this, Mr Laurence Liew, Director of AI Innovation, AI Singapore, gave a talk on the relevance of Artificial Intelligence to our daily lives and the dangers of it as well as ways to prevent this unfair use of AI.

Next, Ms Gillian Cheng, AI Success Director, DataRobot, discussed biases in AI and why this exists. She also touched on the various jobs created or replaced by AI, which was especially important and relevant to our future and our career aspirations. “Ai is like a super smart kid that is unhinged and uncultured” this quote from Ms Cheng truly captures her views, showing that AI might seem very intelligent, but it is also ‘our if it’s mind’. Ms Cheng’s enthusiasm coupled with her humorous and interesting talk kept everyone engaged throughout.

Lastly, a panel discussion was held with Mr Liew and Ms Cheng. In the course of this, numerous insightful questions were asked by the students, and these were met with well-versed answers and suggestions. It was an interesting experience to interact with students from other schools and to hear their own queries. This was the perfect ending to an enlightening afternoon. Leaving the hall, ‘AI’ was on everyone's mouths.

One key takeaway we had from this insightful talk was the many copyright issues AI has brought into our lives such as stealing artworks and using chatbots like Chat GPT to craft answers. Through this talk we learnt about the moral wrongs of using AI in this manner and what we can do to stop this.

All in all, this was a very informative and relevant talk that we enjoyed thoroughly and we were happy to be given the opportunity to attend it.
