Students in St. Nicholas Girls’ School have always been known for their high achieving conducts, and that itself deserves a pat on their backs, but there are those who strive to achieve more than just exceptional grades, and go the extra mile to excel in other aspects of their school life. These model students include Tan Yong Neng from 4 Hope who received the Kindness Award, the awardee of the Pupil of the Year accolade, Andrea Lim from 4 Diligence, Pebbyl Ang of 4 Unity who received the Outstanding Performance in the Sports Award, Ariel Grace Cheah from 4 Unity was awarded the Leadership Award, Chloe Sin Kaye of 4 Purity who was awarded the Arts Award and Tay Karlyn of 4 Unity who was awarded the Sister Deirdre O’ Loan Award.     They have gone above and beyond just grades, demonstrating exemplary character and attaining commendable achievements. Here are some of our awardee’s thoughts about receiving the awards and how they managed to achieve excellence in their own unique ways outside of school!

As the recipient of the Kindness Award, Tan Yong Neng of 4 Hope was honoured and overjoyed to have received it. She expressed her immense gratitude to her amazing teachers, friends and family who helped her along her journey, wishing to pass on motivation and encouragement to our fellow students to reach out and be kind to one another. “For kindness, it’s something that you do out of your own heart — it’s automatic and it’s something that just happens. Doing something small is what truly matters as it is a hundred actions that make up a hundred percent, and not one action that makes up a hundred percent.” Her inspiring messages and compassionate actions make her a role model, deserving of the kindness award!

As the recipient of the Pupil of the Year Award, Andrea Lim of 4 Diligence lives by the mantra ‘live, laugh, love'. Redefining arbitrary notions of beauty, Andrea seeks out greater meaning in her daily routine and has assimilated the habit of harbouring gratitude and gaiety towards even the most minuscule of things! Via this, she combats the distress elicited by the mounds of school work and galvanises herself to persevere despite everything.

As the recipient of the Outstanding Performance in the Sports Award, Pebbyl Ang of 4 Unity was honoured and surprised as she did not expect herself to receive it. Her journey in Rhythmic Gymnastics started in her Primary 1 CCA and was slowly exposed to more competitions. She was very grateful to have the chance to train with the national team, happy to continue her career and journey in the sport. Although she had to deal with injuries and mental health issues, and describes her journey as a gymnast as one with many ups and downs, she says, “A lot of my inspiration and motivation that kept me going comes from my loved ones and the people that supported me, such as my coaches, my family — they always inspire and motivate me to do even better. I keep trying to improve myself because of these people — I want to make them and myself proud.” She indeed worked very hard, stating that she trains 4-5 hours daily, and still has to juggle school work as well. Her journey in sports has developed her holistically as a person, playing a big part in her upbringing by improving her time management skills and discipline too!

Our Secondary 4 award winners have worked hard and put in immense effort in all that they have done, and have been given due recognition for their contributions to the school. We should all follow by example and strive towards success. Congratulations to all the awardees!
