Cloud Bread was the hottest food trend last year, with over 2.2 billion TikTok videos and around 35,000 instagram posts. It started at the beginning of August, went viral on social media, with many users baking it and then tearing it apart to reveal a light fluffy pastry that resembles a cloud. Many people thought the colours were aesthetically pleasing, the cotton-like texture appetising, and decided to jump on the bandwagon and tried baking it.
It is an easy, three-ingredient dish that only consists of egg whites, sugar, and cornstarch. Most people opt to use different food colourings to make it look more appealing, and to experiment with designs and shades. Its simple looks belie the precision required to get the right texture. Baking it for too long may result in it not rising, and whipping the egg whites to a ‘stiff peaks’ consistency is extremely important in order to get the ideal fluffy texture.
Although many people have liked it for the way it melts in their mouths, there are some who commented that the cloud bread’s taste is disappointing. For a pastry that is made out of almost entirely egg whites, it is not surprising that it just tastes like sugary burnt eggs. Its pretty colours and alluring texture is deceiving, with quite a number of people who have tried the recipe saying that it is like ‘ an egg white tortilla, with not much taste’.
On the other hand, one advantage of this dish’s overly simple recipe is that users are free to be creative. Not a fan of the overwhelming egg taste? Then just add in some flavourings or extracts to achieve the desired taste. Adding in things like sprinkles or chocolate will definitely help to make the bread even more tasty.
Cloud bread is also a great alternative to bread as it is gluten-free and keto friendly. I also feel that baking it is quite a fun experience for people who are just in the mood to bake something pretty. To sum things up, this is quite an interesting and unique trend and I hope it stays.
