The highly anticipated Jubilate XIII had finally returned this year, taking centre stage on the 16th of September. An enthralling showcase of our Performing Arts CCA groups’ talents and hard work, Jubilate XIII took on the format of an online broadcast this year, allowing us to watch the exciting performances from the comforts of our own homes! It was truly a night of festivities to remember, highlighting the achievements of our Performing Arts 姐妹们.

“Human rights! Human rights! Human rights!” a skit that made all of us double over with laughter and left us wondering if minions need rights, Literary Drama Society definitely made their performance one to remember with their hilarious parodies. They also showcased their acting prowess with thought-provoking commentaries on our society, reminding us of our strength and the importance of self-love.

Chinese Drama Society also gave us a performance worthy of a standing ovation, “彩”. Imagine a world without colour, all the chaos that would ensue. With the use of incredible special effects, CDS took us on a journey exploring a world devoid of colour, after the main character, Xiao Mei, selfishly wished for all the colours in the world to disappear. Imparting an important lesson on the repercussions of one’s actions, they did not fail to impress with this self-directed and self-written play!

Speaking of impressive performances, naturally International Dance and Chinese Dance Society’s captivating choreographies come to mind. International Dance’s lively dance piece “Just Swinging” brought Broadway right to us! Eriel Wah from 3 Unity thoroughly enjoyed preparing for this as it allowed her to grow closer to the rest of the CCA. She recalled the memorable first take, “The lights, the cameras, it was really such an amazing experience as I felt so alive performing, which made me appreciate being in a Performing Arts CCA more.” Indeed, all the dancers shone brightly when they performed! Chinese Dance’s classic dance piece “荷花欲语” expresses the truth, goodness and beauty of the world. Chloe Goh from 3 Loyalty recalled the difficulties they faced, “It was tough using large props like the fans in our dance as we found it hard to synchronise, but with more practice, we managed to pull it off successfully.” They definitely did pull it off as the graceful and fluid movements were truly mesmerising!

Along with exciting and nostalgic pieces such as the medley of Studio Ghibli’s songs performed by the String Orchestra, all of us were surely in awe of their spectacular musical performances. The pieces performed by the Symphonic Band, Chinese Orchestra, Strings Orchestra and Primary Guzheng certainly gave us a glimpse of their amazing talents and the synergy of the entire CCA when they played their musical pieces together.

Last but not least, the concert would not have been completed without Choir. Both the Primary and Secondary Choir sang their hearts out through the melodious pieces. Sarah Lim from 3 Faith mentioned that “Through our songs, we truly wanted to show that the power of togetherness and unity as a Choir really got us through the tough times Covid brought about. Hence, one of our songs, "Somewhere Out There", was dedicated to express our longing to be together with each other as the 2 years of tightened measures made singing quite restrictive. Our other song was also about the power of friendship and unity that brought the entire CCA together, which really allowed us to shine as one voice.” Indeed, through listening to their voices, songs and lyrics, many would be inspired to persevere during tough times and rise again from challenges.

Alas, the long-awaited Jubilate XIII came to an end, with many online viewers feeling bittersweet. After months of preparation, several rehearsals and filming for the actual broadcast, we are certainly proud of everyone involved for accomplishing this great feat. Despite it being an online broadcast, it was heartening to see many students gathering virtually to show their support to fellow performing art members. Jubilate XIII truly displayed the brilliant abilities of our Performing Arts CCA groups who never fail to dominate the stage yet again!
