A yearly school tradition in St Nicholas, all Secondary 3 students participated in a range of different workshops as part of the Student Development Day to deepen our knowledge and hone our skills outside of the academic curriculum. As the cohort had been allocated to their new classes only months back, these activities served as an amazing opportunity for us to learn more about each other and deepen bonds.
Following the class bonding activities, classes were tasked to create a cheer and design a class flag as a symbol of their shared identity and aspirations as a class. This collaborative endeavor allowed many students to foster a sense of camaraderie and belonging to their new class as they put their heads together to brainstorm ideas. With everyone’s help, each class took turns to unveil their vibrant class flags, share their class mottos and belt out spirited cheers to the rest of the cohort the very next day.
We also had the exclusive chance to watch the school movie From Victoria Street to Ang Mo Kio, which took us back to the mid 20th century on the grounds of Victoria Street, where the legacy of St Nicholas’ Girls School first began. Enraptured, we watched this compilation of stories from an era past, as the documentary deftly transitioned to modern Singapore and showcased how the school grew to what it was today.
Finally, we attended a leadership workshop that painted a vivid portrait of leaders who dared to dream big and turn their visions into reality. We were also given the chance to discover our unique personality types and leadership styles through an informal assessment prior to the workshop. Immersed in the journey of self-discovery, we not only gained profound insights into our own identities but also received invaluable guidance on cultivating our inherent talents and transforming them into formidable strengths.
As the curtains fell on the two Student Development Days, an indelible mark was left on every student as their experience indubitably helped to broaden their horizons.
