The Secondary 4 Student Development Day was held across 2 days and provided the graduating batch with much needed advice on how to improve our productivity for our upcoming examinations as well as insight on different career paths.
On the first day, we engaged in a peak performance workshop which introduced us to unique study tips based on our strengths and capabilities. As an extension of the workshops held in previous years that helped us find out each of our talents, this workshop builds our existing knowledge of our strengths to find personalised study methods that would best fit our needs and boost our productivity. This was especially helpful for us due to the upcoming major examinations. In addition, we also took part in a financial literacy workshop that introduced us to the idea of taxes, savings and more. These were taught in the form of a game which definitely got our classes riled up! It was a unique workshop that taught us an important life skill which will definitely come in handy in the future.
On top of the enriching workshops, a thoroughly planned ‘Careers Day’ awaited the Secondary 4 cohort. It started off with talks from three different speakers from Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), Singapore Management University (SMU) and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) respectively. Not only did the speakers share possible subjects, courses and programmes unique to each university, they also touched on the relevant and important skill sets that universities look out for in students of the 21st century. As such, we left the sharing while broadening their perspectives and gaining much insights in the future study pathways.
Next, every student attended 2 career talks that they have previously indicated interest in. These talks involved the invitation of professionals or individuals who specialise in their field of work, ranging from the STEM industry, to the Arts and Entertainment scene in Singapore. It was such an eye-opener as the speakers shared more on their careers, while clarifying and answering questions from eager students. A Secondary 4 student who attended Ms Eunyce Yap’s Entrepreneurship talk commented that she found the speaker’s sharing about her career very enriching. The speaker provided her with fresh perspectives to keep in mind when considering the various work industries. It was truly an honour to be able to directly hear from these professionals, which allowed many of us to gain a deeper understanding of what each industry entails for them.
Through the sharings, talks and workshops on useful skill sets, career guidance and study pathways, all of us were blessed with the opportunity to listen, learn and better prepare ourselves as we gradually enter new stages in our lives. This Careers Day will indeed be an unforgettable and insightful experience for all!
